Short answer
If you search for how to backup Gemini conversations or save a permanent local copy, your Gemini history is valuable data: prompts, research, and drafts built over months. The Gemini UI is not an archive. A browser-local export is the fastest way to keep everything readable, searchable, and portable to Obsidian or Notion.
Why backup Gemini conversations locally?
Account switches, workspace changes, and UI updates can make old chats harder to find. Google's interface is built for chatting, not for repeatable archives. Local files work offline and feed note apps or local LLM workflows without relying on the Gemini sidebar alone.
- Account risk: switching Google accounts or losing access can hide history you still need.
- No fast native bulk export: manual copy-paste does not scale across a full library.
- Search limitations: finding an old Gemini thread gets painful as your library grows.
- Portability: local files work offline and import into Obsidian, Notion, or scripts later.
What should a good Gemini backup include?
A useful archive captures conversation titles, user messages, assistant replies, and enough structure to read or search later. HTML is human-readable and prints to PDF. JSON is structured for scripts and databases. Markdown fits note-taking apps and long-term knowledge bases. Gemini Power Exporter supports all three in one combined file per export.
- HTML: human-readable, opens in any browser, easy to print to PDF
- JSON: structured data for scripts, databases, or custom tools
- Markdown: ideal for note-taking apps and long-term knowledge bases
How do you export all Gemini chats for backup?
- Install from the best free Gemini export extension and open gemini.google.com.
- Stay signed in on the Gemini tab while you export.
- Open the extension popup and load the chat list if needed.
- Select All conversations or pick specific chats to archive.
- Choose HTML (for reading), JSON (for data), or Markdown (for notes).
- Click Export and store the file on your drive, NAS, or cloud backup.
Keep the Gemini tab and extension popup open until the export finishes. The extension loads your chat list and full threads from your logged-in Gemini session. Very large libraries can still take a few minutes. All processing stays in your browser.
For Markdown vaults after export, see export Gemini to Markdown. If you also use ChatGPT or Claude, the same Pro key unlocks ChatGPT Power Exporter and Claude Power Exporter.
What backup strategy actually works long term?
Weekly snapshots
Export new or changed conversations once a week. Use chat selection to grab only threads updated since your last backup.
Full archive once
Do one full export when you first install the tool. Store it in a dated folder like gemini-backup-2026-08.
3-2-1 rule
Keep 3 copies of important exports, on 2 different media, with 1 off-site (for example an external drive plus cloud storage).
Is backup private with Gemini Power Exporter?
Gemini Power Exporter does not upload your conversations to developer servers during export. Optional Pro license verification sends only your license key, never chat text. Read our privacy policy for details. Free includes 5 chats total so you can validate the workflow; Pro is EUR 19 one-time for unlimited exports across all three AI exporters.
